Location: Central Hawke’s Bay

About: Smedley offers high quality practical training backed up with a sound theory base for good farm management. It teaches cadets to be skilled and knowledgeable farmers. It's a sheep, beef and deer FarmIQ property. Size: 5570 hectares.

Age criteria: 17-20. Must still be attending school.

Number of places: 12

Waipaoa Station Farm Cadet Training Trust

Location: Gisborne

About: The training is based at Waipaoa Station on one of the East Coast’s established hill country properties. With 1760 hectares of effective land sustaining 16,000 stock units.

Age criteria: 16-19

Length: Two-year cadetship

Otiwhiti Station Land Based Training School

Location: Hunterville

About: Operating since 2007, cadets have proved to be well skilled in both theory and practice, with many past cadets currently working in the agricultural sector as valuable employees. The Otiwhiti Station Land Based Training Agricultural School is a not for profit charitable company between Duncan Land Company and Land Based Training Ltd.

Entry criteria:

Students must have NCEA Level 2 (minimum of 8 credits) Maths or equivalent.

Average to above average academic achievement.

If students wish to enter at Year 12 (Form 6) or above, they must have either passed NCEA Level 1 or may gain entry at the discretion of management.

Year 13 students are preferred.

Length: 44 weeks

Number of places: 16

Pukemiro Station Cadetship

Location: Dannevirke

About: Since 2014, the Station has been used to train young agricultural sheep and beef students. It's hands-on, focused both on the farm and in the classroom, with cadets living on site in their own cottage throughout the duration of the programme.

Age criteria: 16 years + at 1st January 2021

Length: Two-year Cadetship.

Number of places: Three

Applications open: 25th June 2021

Open days: 5th - 6th  June 2021. 9:30am. 

Applications close: 23rd July 2021

Cadetship commences: January 2022


Coleridge Downs

Location: Rakaia Gorge

About: Coleridge Downs Training Farm is 10,000 hectares, running 42,000 stock units. The operation comprises of four properties with 17 staff. The general manager is Tony Plunkett.

Criteria: Applicants must have Level 2 NCEA or be well on the way to achieving it and must be direct school leavers. Applications must have a passion and hunger to succeed in the industry.

Number of places available: Three

Length of time: Two-year cadetship with the opportunity of gaining Level 3 and 4 PrimaryITO qualifications.

Jeff Farm Cadetship

Location: Near Gore

About: Jeff Farm is a 2,424ha farm managed by The Salvation Army that trains (and funds training for) young people for a career in the New Zealand agricultural industry. In August 2017, the farm was recognised as the best farm in the country for training the next generation of farmers, winning the Silver Fern Farms Sheep Industry Trainer of the Year award at the Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s Sheep Industry Awards.

Age criteria: 16-20

Length: Two-year Cadetship.

GROWING FUTURE FARMERS (GFF) is a charitable training trust with a vision to nurture quality people into the agri-business sector. Through a national collaborative training and development programme GFF aims to provide a credible pathway for future farmers, from an entry level Essential Farm Skills Programme to Advanced Farm Skills and Business Management. GFF is a motivated employer led training initiative seeking farmers willing to invest in the future of the sheep, beef and deer sector by providing a two year on-farm "entry level" training opportunity for young people (with GFF structure & liaison support).
